Poland and Sweden deepen their Baltic security partnership

Poland and Sweden held their first intergovernmental consultations in Gdynia on 29 June, building on the strategic partnership renewed in November 2024. The joint declaration treats Baltic security as a shared policy area and calls for deeper cooperation across defence, transport, infrastructure, foreign policy and civil resilience.

The Polish government’s event notice placed an agreement for three A26 submarines under the Orka programme at the centre of the meeting. The wider declaration also points to work on a Baltic Pact, protection of critical infrastructure, military mobility and stronger port and transport capacity, showing that the relationship extends beyond a single procurement.

For Poland, the important test is delivery: industrial participation, training, interim naval capability and infrastructure must move in step with formal agreements. For the region, closer Polish-Swedish coordination adds a practical north-south link between NATO’s Baltic members at a time when both governments identify Russia and hybrid activity as the principal long-term security challenge.
