Friday, 14 August 2026 will be a day off for members of Poland’s civil service under an order issued by the Prime Minister. The reason is that the statutory holiday on 15 August falls on a Saturday. That does not make 14 August a new nationwide public holiday for every worker and every institution. It creates a practical patchwork in which many central-government offices close while other organisations choose a different compensatory date or operate normally.

The general labour rule is broader: a statutory holiday falling on a day other than Sunday reduces working time in the relevant settlement period. For employees whose normal five-day schedule treats Saturday as a non-working day, the employer generally designates another day off. That day does not have to be 14 August unless the employer or responsible authority selects it.
Readers should distinguish the civil service from all public services. Individual courts, prosecutors, local-government offices, inspectorates, universities, clinics, and public companies can publish their own schedules. Krakow’s district prosecutor’s office, for example, has separately announced 14 August as a closure day. A national announcement should therefore prompt a check of the exact institution, not an assumption that every public counter in the city will be closed.
What it means
Private employers, banks, shopping centres, pharmacies, transport operators, and shops follow their own schedules within labour and trading rules. Saturday, 15 August remains the statutory holiday itself, so retail and service availability may also change on that date. Emergency services continue, but routine counters, helplines, collection points, and appointment calendars can operate differently. Online submission may remain available even when staff process the case later.
The low-risk plan is to complete time-sensitive public-office tasks by Thursday, 13 August. Check the institution’s own notice, especially for passports, residence matters, courts, tax administration, vehicle registration, and document collection. If a deadline is legal or procedural, do not infer an extension from a closed door; verify the governing rule or obtain professional advice for the specific case.
