Krakow tests grazing as a small but visible urban-nature tool

Krakow has started the civic-budget project "Kozy na wypasie - zielone kosiarki w Krakowie", placing goats and sheep at Zakrzówek and the green area of Fort Bodzów for the coming months. The premise is simple: use controlled grazing where it can maintain selected green areas without noisy machinery or exhaust emissions.

What to know

The idea is not that animals replace normal city greenery management everywhere. Its value is narrower and more interesting: grazing can help handle vegetation in specific landscapes while creating better conditions for pollinators, birds and other urban wildlife. It also gives the city an educational story residents can actually see.

The public-facing rule is equally important. Visitors should keep distance, avoid feeding the animals and avoid disrupting the grazing. A project like this works only if it is treated as living maintenance and education, not as a petting attraction.
