Krakow’s Architecture and Urban Planning Department issued a building permit for the citizen-budget project known as “Let’s plant trees on the Main Square”. The decision opens the next stage of one of the city’s most complicated greenery projects.

What to know

The difficulty comes from the place itself. The Main Square is a UNESCO-listed historic space with underground infrastructure, archaeological layers and protected sightlines. The city says the permit followed extra design work, utility coordination and drainage planning.

The project won strong public backing in the 2022 citizen budget, but the latest step shows why implementation has been slower than a normal planting job. The practical question now is sequencing: how the city times works, protects the square’s heritage and turns the permit into visible greenery.
